A Survivor’s Kit for the Celebrity Personal Assistant (or Anyone with a Pesky Boss)

I have to admit that one of the most fun parts of being a reviewer is that you learn something new every day. It was not until I had read Dealing With Divas that I realized there was an association solely committed to the plight of those that work for the famous. Well there is, and it is called The Association of Celebrity Personal Assistants.

I am not a personal assistant to a celebrity, but I certainly understand the issues involved. Being a reviewer and interviewer I play on the edge of the celebrity world. Some of the folks I have worked with are indeed ‘different.’ My favorite story concerns an interview I had scheduled with Keith Emerson, I called him at the prearranged time of noon, and get his answering machine, I leave a message and move on to the next project. It had been a long day, so about 9pm my wife and I call it a day. The next thing I know is my wife Jan shaking me awake, and saying “Honey, you are going to hate me, the phone rang, I thought it was Joey (her 15 year old son), so I think I have just been rude to Keith Emerson.”

On the whole I have found the rich and famous to be fairly easy to get along with, but on the other hand I have seen up close and personal just how demanding the Divas can be. Last summer my wife and I were the invited guests of a very famous singer, he wasn’t a diva, but his wife certainly was. I watched in awe as from the stage, with mic in her hand she gave the three guys running the soundboard a good solid berating for everyone within a mile radius to hear, and the concert wasn’t due to start for another 2 hours. The poor guys had glazed expressions on their faces, and were obviously wondering why the hell they had taken the job!

While Dealing With Divas is clearly aimed at the niche market of Personal Assistants that work with the sometimes eccentric and egocentric, it is a delightful little read. It is by no means a ‘show and tell,’ there are no wild revelations about your favorite star, but there are some truly funny anecdotal tales.

My one criticism of Dealing With Divas is that it is not nearly long enough. You just start to enjoy the subject, and maybe speculate about some of the situations, and Shelley Anderson pulls the rug out from under you, there are no more pages to read!

She shares one wonderful ‘agony column’ letter that she received that I think really encapsulates the entire industry of dealing with the rich and famous:

I’m fed up. My boss is unappreciative of how I got her on a fully booked, nonstop flight from New York to Bangladesh. She was unhappy that it was a 757, not a 747, and that the seats were blue and not maroon.

What a fun read, you can find out more at the Dealing With Divas web site, and order your copy from Amazon.

Dr. John Breeding Ph.D. Psychologist reviews the book “Medication Madness: A Psychiatrist Exposes the Dangers of Mood-Altering Medications” by Dr. Peter Breggin. Medications for everything from depression and anxiety to ADHD and insomnia are being prescribed in alarming numbers across the country, but the cure is often worse than the original problem. Medication Madness is a fascinating, frightening, and dramatic look at the role that psychiatric medications have played in fifty cases of suicide, murder, and other violent, criminal, and bizarre behaviors. As a psychiatrist who believes in holding people responsible for their conduct, the weight of scientific evidence and years of clinical experience eventually convinced Dr. Breggin that psychiatric drugs frequently cause individuals to lose their judgment and their ability to control their emotions and actions. Medication Madness raises and examines the issues surrounding personal responsibility when behavior seems driven by drug-induced adverse reactions and intoxication. Dr. Breggin personally evaluated the cases in the book in his role as a treating psychiatrist, consultant or medical expert. He interviewed survivors and witnesses, and reviewed extensive medical, occupational, educational and police records. The great majority of individuals lived exemplary lives and committed no criminal or bizarre actions prior to taking the psychiatric medications. Medication Madness reads like a medical thriller, true crime story …
Help answer the question about Book Reviews
Where can I find two professional book reviews for the book "Physics Modeling for Game Programmers"?
I looked through my university library's review database and also searched on Google, but I can't seem to find any professional book reviews for the text "Physics Modeling for Game Programmers" by David Conger.
Everyone can agree that the world is full of information on weight loss. There are plenty of weight loss books in the bookstores, pamphlets in the check out lanes of the grocery stores and there are even late night infomercials devoted to weight loss. Obviously, the internet is also chock full of information on losing weight. There is plenty of noise being made about weight loss and while there is plenty of good information available, there is also a lot of bad information and choosing the right diet books online can be difficult at times.

One of the reasons it is so hard to figure out the real cause of our obesity is that the subject has been covered in depth by plenty of different authors each covering it in their own unique way. There are plenty of people selling diet tips and information about weight loss who are only interested in making a sale and not in actually helping you to lose weight. Other authors are building upon misinformation that they learned from other sources that weren’t entirely reliable. The sad thing is that we are inherently trusting when it comes to weight loss information. Here are a few hints to help you figure out who is the real deal when it comes to finding a good weight loss book on the internet.

The first thing you should look for is a book that will help you lose weight without trying to convince you to purchase a specific product. A lot of the weight loss products being peddled by these books are filled with chemicals that are, according to the advertisements, meant to reduce the fat and calorie counts in the food you are eating. The truth is that these products are filled with chemicals that actually contribute to a person’s obesity. A lot of these products are produced by companies that know exactly what their chemicals do but they want to get us hooked on the product for a long time – possibly forever! By doing this, they guarantee their income stream.

Another thing you should look for when buying a diet book online is information that is easy to understand and does not delve into a bunch of superfluous information that has been released by all of the other diet companies as well. Look for book reviews by people who have actually used the book’s information to help them lose weight. Look beyond a book’s marketing materials when you are trying to decide if a diet book is right for you.

I flicked through the first few pages of this book, and decided to run a very unscientific poll. I asked several people that I know “Do you believe in ghosts”. Pretty much this unscientific method revealed that about 1/3 do, 1/3 don’t, and the other 1/3 could not care less.

Do I believe in them? I honestly don’t know. Ghosts are like many things in our mythic based culture. Some might argue that man created them to satisfy a need to understand, accept, and pigeon hole a problem that was not readily explainable, ‘What happens in death’. Indeed there is something darkly romantic in the concept of someone’s spirit remaining on earth following an untimely demise. Not usually to seek revenge, just understanding, and very occasionally justice.

Ghosts are fickle entities to say the least, few of us have ever encountered them. In my case, the things that go bump in the night is usually a stray cat tipping the garbage over. But that is not to cast doubt on their existence, maybe I do not have the unique psychic equipment to sense them.

Author Melissa Van Rossum on the other hand seems to have a very acute sense of ethereal energy, and Their Way Home takes us on an exploration of some of her encounters, and advises us on what we should do.

Ghosts in her estimation are spirits that for one reason or another, do not, or do not think they can, or want to, move on to the other side. This has nothing to do with heaven or hell, it is just indecision. Some stay as a way of atonement to loved ones they have left, some stay feeling cheated by circumstances, and some stay because they don’t know how to cross over to the other side.

Yes, I remain skeptical, books like this are long on narrative, high on inconsequential facts, and very short on hard facts. However, my skepticism has been tempered somewhat, because unless I am very mistaken, someone that I know is mentioned in this book.

Their Way Home breaks down into three very distinct parts. It begins with stories of Melissa Van Rossum’s experiences in showing ghosts the way to cross over to the other side and her own self discovery of her abilities. Part two explores how others have encountered ethereal loved ones, and her own experience with dealing with the death of a near relative. Finally part three is ‘how to’ and explanation of the process.

Their Way Home, makes for an entertaining read, that’s for sure. Do I buy into it? That part I am not convinced about. I do know that there are many things that even with our advanced technology still are unexplained. While the Gypsy fortune teller at the fairground is likely a con, what about Nostradamus? In that same vein, cold fusion is pooh-poohed by the scientific community, yet creating mass out of nothing ‘the big bang theory’ is all the rage. We as humans have much to learn.

You can get your copy of Their Way Home from Amazon.

The Dow Jones industrial average has fallen nearly 240 points and the headline in the local paper is screaming “Wall Street suffers another big hit.” Serious-faced announcers on cable-TV are saying the Dow is down 10.03 percent from its mid-October closing high, officially putting the blue chip index past the 10 percent threshold that signifies a correction.

For Steven R. Selengut, author of The Brainwashing of the American Investor, corrections such as this are as welcome as rallies. The market, he points out, is just doing what the market has always done.

“Here is some advice that you just won’t hear on CNBC or read in The Journal,” he writes in this revised edition of an earlier book bearing the same name. “It is based on one incredibly simple market fact: There has never been a market correction that has not succumbed to yet another rally. So when the doom and gloom noise becomes deafening, get yourself out there and party.”

When the markets move into a correction, Selengut’s investment strategy already has investors sitting on a pile of cash — accumulated profits taken on stocks as the market rallied — plus cash thrown off from fixed-income securities. As the NYSE-traded stocks he follows move down 20 percent or more, he moves back into them and waits for a 10 percent profit to cash out and then look for another opportunity to repeat the process.

Even better, for skittish investors such as me, Selengut’s unique “Working Capital Model” reduces the emotional factor by taking the emphasis off market value and focusing on growth of working capital, defined as the total cost basis of the securities and cash in the portfolio. As long as working capital is increasing, market value is irrelevant.

As a recent retiree, I appreciate this conservative approach to growing working capital. I implemented and followed the trading strategy myself for about a year and a half before turning my account over to Sanco Services, an investment management company founded and operated by Selengut. The Working Capital Model worked the way it was presented. My only reason for turning the account over to Sanco was to be sure that my financial assets would be handled in such a way that my wife would not have to worry about an adequate income in the event that I was no longer able to manage the assets myself.

The Brainwashing of the American Investor is a book I wish I had been able to read 30 years ago. Those of you who still have years of investing ahead of you would do well to buy this book and read it thoroughly two or three times. It will save you a lifetime of mistakes that come from following conventional wisdom.

This is the book that Wall Street does not want you to read.

———————————————————————

Market Wizards by Jack D. Schwager is essential reading for any trader, as it gets inside the minds of some of the world’s all time best traders – and they’ve collectively made billions.

Whilst these traders are all different in character, and the trading methods they deploy, they all share the common traits that you must have to make big profits consistently.

Let’s look at Market Wizards, and How Jack Shwager manages to put together a classic work of trading insight.

Market Wizards Format

The format of the book is essentially just interviews of some of the greatest traders of all time, and them sharing their wisdom. They may all be different types of traders, but in many ways, they’re all the same in terms of essential character traits – and this is why Market Wizards is such a valuable book.

Market Wizard Trading Strategies

Readers are not going to learn specific trading strategies, as none of the traders discusses specifics – they only make generalizations. There are however some points that are revealed about their methods of trading:

. Most of the traders have essentially simple strategies, which they use to make money.

. The trading method, or strategy is only one part of the equation – the other is discipline, which comes from confidence.

. All the traders know their strategies work – they’ve developed and tested them – and have the confidence to continue following their strategies through losing periods.

Many traders make the mistake of trying to follow other people’s methods, and of course, when losses occur they lose their discipline and lose money.

Character traits that are common to all the traders interviewed by Jack Shwager include:

1. All those interviewed had the desire to succeed, and the mindset to achieve their goals – with many overcoming significant obstacles along the way.

2. All the traders have supreme confidence in what they are doing – and have the attitude that they will make money.

3. All the traders talked of discipline as being key to success.

4. All the traders focus on protection – and stressed money management as a key element in trading.

5. All the traders stressed patience – and waiting for the right opportunity.

6. All the traders stressed acting independently and staying away from the crowd.

Finally, they all stressed a love of what they do.

When you read Market Wizards, you are struck by the fact that no one can actually give you success – it’s up to you and you alone.

You need to rely on yourself.

Trading is actually quite simple, but to get the right mindset, and method, and be able to apply it with discipline, requires unwavering self believe and confidence.

Market Wizards by Jack D. Schwager, is simply one of the most inspirational trading books of all time, and is required reading for novice or pro – as this book can put you on the road to trading success.

FOR PRICING & SPECS ON THIS CAR VISIT: www.kbb.com Nissan Murano. The new Nissan Murano invokes strong emotions. Its provocative design is a head-turner, but while many vehicles in the segment are offering three rows of seating, it has remained resolutely a five-seater even after a serious re-design for the 2009 model year. Style rather than passenger-carrying capacity is the Muranos calling card, and the Murano was one of the first crossovers to take this tack. The Ford Edge and Mazda CX-7 are other vehicles playing in this sandbox. Welcome to our comprehensive Kelley Blue Book review of the Nissan Murano. You won’t get your hand held when you’re blue. You won’t have your manuscript lovingly edited. Even worse than this cold, business-like treatment, you’re unlikely to get your works placed with a publisher by an agent today if you are a budding author. Today: 40% wont read manuscripts by unpublished authors (those who do usually charge) 80% won’t handle professional books over 90% won’t handle regional books, satire, reference or technical works only 2% have a special interest in literature or quality fiction Agents have changed, along with the publishing industry. They can no longer do the wonderful things they used to for their clients. As publishing houses have been absorbed by big conglomerates, decision-making has moved from editors who love words to accountants who love healthy bottom lines. Their criteria: will it sell? They tend to stick to writers with track records, so the same authors appear year after year on best seller lists. Few new voices are emerging from the big publishing houses which once brought us Faulkner and Hemingway.

Ironically, the best way to get their attention is to turn your back on both agents

few authors have the information they need to successfully maneuver today’s brave new publishing world. They need advise on each step. That’s why I gave up being a Literary Agent in favor of becoming the world’s first Author’s Advocate. I found that most writers don’t start thinking about marketing until they have a finished manuscript — which often means a complete rewrite is needed to get a marketable manuscript. I like to work with authors from concept to sales, helping them make the essential decisions that lead to publishing success.

To write a book that will sell today, you have to be very clear about:

1. what you want to write (and what will sell)

2. the most appropriate writing style for your targeted audience

3. your best publishing option

4. how to get your book out before the book-buying public

Armed with up-to-date information on buying trends and publishing options, you can save yourself a lot of time and grief. The information is readily available in such publications as

Writer’s Digest, Publishers Weekly, The Library Journal, The New York Times’ and the Los Angeles Times’ Book Review. For self-publishers there is The Small Press Review and membership in the Publishers Marketing Association. The information is out there for anyone willing to do the research. Add to this a clear understanding of your audience and what you want to say to this audience and you’re launched on writing a book that will sell. Writers today have to be able to think like editors and publishers and book distributors.

Publishing today is market-driven, and the reality is that a big publishing house may not be your best choice.

I’ve put the ground rules of this new approach to publishing success in my new book, Everything You Need to Know to WRITE PUBLISH & MARKET YOUR BOOK. It’s available at www.acappela.comand big publishers. The large publishing houses now rely on their sales reps to scout out self-published and small-imprint books that are selling well. They then approach the authors about printing a second edition of their self-published books. This often results a lucrative book contract if an author decides to go for the deal. But many authors are saying no to the Big Boys. Why settle for 6-15% royalties when you can keep up to 80% of the profits from your book sales and retain the rights to TV and video productions, foreign rights, book clubs, etc?. Especially since you’re going to have to do most of the marketing work yourself anyhow. No, authors have too many other options today to accept whatever big publishing houses offer. And you don’t need an agent to pursue them. There are niche publishers and coop publishers (they will work directly with an author) ; there is self-publishing and/or electronic publishing (you become your own publisher). There are also lots of traditional ways to get out the word about a book without spending a dime, and the Internet has added a whole new dimension to cost-free marketing.

The problem is that

The press release bills this book as a love story, I disagree, it is a story about love. Specifically one man’s search for an everlasting love. We meet Wayne Cavanaugh as a sophmore attending the rather blue collar Drexel College where he is studying engineering. Through flashbacks author Rob Costelloe explores Wayne’s young life and his fascination with the concept of love. More specifically his quest to take love to a higher plane, an aesthetic that few people can appreciate, let alone achieve.

In a chance encounter following a purse snatching Wayne meets pretty Penn State junior Nancy Hammond. This launches Wayne off on his odyssey to find that elusive perfect love. Although he is convinced that Nancy is the one, and Nancy certainly reciprocates the feelings, they have many hurdles to cross, not least of which is the disparity in their social backgrounds. Nancy comes from a rich and influential family, while Wayne is from a very working class one. Of course this problem matters little to the young lovers, however their families and to a certain extent their friends are a whole different situation. Some view Wayne as an opportunist while others are less kind and lean towards thinking him a gold digger.

With grit and determination the couple weather the storms and as time passes most of the protagonists grudgingly accept the pair and their love for each other. The families though remain at loggerheads with their children. One thing that popped into my head while reading Coinage Of Commitment was had the roles been reversed with him being from an affluent family and her the poor country girl the relationship would have been viewed as charming, how strange our society is. We have become conditioned to a set of rules, or mores, and when we stray outside the boundaries the walls come up.

It is interesting to watch as this couple matures, Nancy gradually working on elevating Wayne’s social status, and Wayne while not openly resisting makes attempts, if not to actually stem the tide of change, at least slow its relentless progress.

The question is, is this perfect love, and can it last a lifetime? To discover the answer you will have to read the book. Rob Costelloe has created a very thought provoking book that plays on many levels. Part love story, part social commentary, and part exploration of one mans quest for perfection. The standard of the writing is of the highest quality. He states in his biography that he has been writing since he was 8 years old, and that does not surprise me, he is a skilled and splendid wordsmith.

The ending of the book comes with a very strange twist in the tale, and one that will surprise the reader.

About Rob Costelloe: After college, besides pursuing an engineering career in the Gulf Coast region, Rob Costelloe wrote more stories, a teeth-cutting, first novel, and a little poetry. By now, his interest focused on the question of what romantic love can achieve in people’s lives. To pursue this theme, he studied the work of many authors and filmmakers. I basically have just this week-end to do a book review. If she warned us, then most of us in the class would've got a book to read. I would've got one but I didn't know at all.

Here are 9 simple steps to keep in mind when creating a book review. Any kind of book review, either written or via web video, explores the main aspects of the book, along with more specific examples.

However, a good book review is not simply a book report or a summary – it goes a step further and connects the book to the world around us.

Some things to keep in mind when reviewing a book:
1. State the name of the book, author and publication information exactly. This seems simple, but is sadly often botched.

2. Do your research and read the book carefully. Don’t review the book if you haven’t completely read it.

3. Never give away the whole story. The goal is to entice readers with your review. Let them know what the book is about; while leaving them wanting more.

4. What is the theme of the book? If a work of fiction, how does the author use characters and setting to drive the plot?

5. What genre is the book? Does it live up to that genre? If it is a mystery, did it keep you guessing? Or, if for instance a how-to book, could one follow the instructions and perform the tasks described?

6. Let people know how you related to the book. Did it make you laugh or cry? Try to share some highlights of the book without giving away too much. Share your personal connection with the book. It makes the review interesting, and gives the person watching or reading your review a sense of who you are.

7. You don’t have to, in a general sort of way, love the book you’re reviewing. Be specific and give specific examples out of the book that support your opinion.

8. Have you read other titles by the author? Comparing the title you are reviewing to other books by the same author will help people gauge their interest in the book.

9. Do some research about the author. There may be something very interesting about the author that readers want to know.

All economic indicators and financial pundits agree we’re in for a long and deep recession that could get uglier before it stabilizes. However that doesn’t mean you can afford not to market or promote your book. In fact, this may be a better time for you to do so since conventional wisdom says the first thing to cut is advertising, marketing, and PR. What others fail to do shall provide you with less competition and more opportunity.

If you agree on the fundamental of business that the way to make a sound product or service profitable is to market it, then there’s no reason to shy away from that just because the economy is rocky. But what you should do is spend wisely and get the most return on your investment.

True, the nation is in an economic war, meaning everyone is battling for the same dollar. Money is scarce, credit tight. But in order to make money you need to spend some. If you still believe there’s a market for your book, then you must market to it. If you were convinced people won’t be interested in reading it, don’t promote it. But the economy didn’t change this – only your perception did. If you have a book that appeals to 60 million dog owners or 160 million women or some other large group or targeted niche, you should market your book. The only thing that’s changed with the recent economic tumble, is that you’ll need to market smarter and, more often than before. It’s a numbers game, always has been.

Over the past few months, despite a Wall Street freefall…

· The words in your book haven’t changed.

· The ways to market your book haven’t changed.

· The number of people who’d be interested in your book hasn’t changed.

What’s changed is fear rules reality, guessing trumps facts, uncertainty exceeds certainty. If marketing a book was good idea six months ago, then it’s still a good idea today.

Okay, so fewer people will buy anything, and they will spend less money than before. But what will they buy? They will buy the book that helps them escape (a great novel, humor, photography), they will buy books for their kids, they will buy business books (to find a way to make money), and they will buy any book they would have bought previously unless that book covers a toxic topic. Toxic books include books whose advice can’t be implemented: how to travel (no one is spending money on trips), how to buy a car (no one is buying cars) or how to buy and sell real estate during a boom (don’t make me explain this one).

The rules to promoting a book during a recession are the same when the economy is solid: get out there and speak before groups, do radio and television interviews, send your book to reviewers, blog and seek out online opportunities; and tie your message to what’s on people’s minds or in the news.

If you let the recession scare off your promotional efforts you might as well not publish your book either. But if you recognize that there is opportunity in the marketplace, rev up your PR efforts and put your best foot forward!

If you want to know more on how to promote your book during a recession, please send your queries to Brian Feinblum, Planned Television Arts, Chief Marketing Officer feinblumb@plannedtvarts.com 212-583-2718
