Getting news media coverage for your book can be challenging, especially when the number of traditional media outlets (such as daily newspaper book review sections) is shrinking. However, for the lucky or deserving handful who are given a chance to get their message to the masses, too many waste their opportunities.

As one who has worked in book publishing for 20 years and has been involved in arranging thousands of interviews for authors, I can say that most authors – even seminar speakers, motivational trainers, and life coaches – often don’t fully exploit their knowledge, ability or passion. Rather than turning their radio or television interview into a memorable, experience, they simply treat it as a defensive situation with a standard approach of: “I just don’t want to be embarrassed.”

Here are nine ways to steal the show:

1. Don’t let the facts get in the way of a good line. Instead of merely making a statement, say something with some colorful language. Where as one can say: “To lose weight, drink 8-10 glasses of water a day,” another would show some personality. “If you wanna drop those 10 unwanted pounds, then drop down 10 glasses of water every day. Drink up or fatten up. It’s your choice.” See the difference?

2. Give an action step, not an advertisement. Never say “You can buy my book at www.whatever.” Instead, say the name of your book in a smooth sentence: “How To Get Attention is like having a neon sign over your head. You can access 25 free tips at www.whatever.” Now you’ve provided value and stated a specific offer.

3. Make a point and provide an example. People remember a story or something they can specifically identify with rather than an abstract statement.

4. Make it relevant where possible. Tie your message into the news or to what’s on people’s minds.

5. Confess to – or admit – something. Don’t tell us you cheated on your spouse when you’re hawking a cookbook, but do tell us how your six-year-old kid thought your cake tasted like crap. Self-deprecating humor is good. Or tell us how you made a dish 20 times until you found the missing ingredient.

6. Create an enemy. Put every conversation in the context of good vs. evil., new vs. old, us vs. them, etc. Enemies are everywhere. If you’re talking about personal finance, vilify government bailout and corporate greed; if you discuss a disease, you want to eradicate it; if you want to help parents be better at raising kids your enemy can be a situation (kids whining while you’re driving). There’s no end to finding a villain– it can be a person, group, ideology, circumstance, fate –whatever.

7. Express emotions and play to people’s fears, desires, needs, and weaknesses. Make certain assumptions of who will buy your book and identify their concerns. Your interviews should answer these concerns. If you wrote a book on dating and you know in the back of someone’s mind is that they will never get married, then address the issue and do so in a way that it gives a positive, pro-active feeling, which naturally leads them to visit your site.

8. Ask the talk show host or his/her audience for help. Tell them you’re trying to do something (i.e. – get people to stop smoking, if your book is about addiction). Suggest people e-mail you their ideas on how to eradicate the problem. Not only does it unite people, it gives you a whole bunch of e-mail contacts to follow-up with.

9. Be colorful but not boring. Think of a waitress who can simply bring you a plate of food or one who can do a little dance before serving you. Who will you remember? Don’t just drone on with useful info or ideas – deliver it in style.

Now is the time to go to the next level. Join the Information Revolution of the new millennium. If you are willing to explore new realms, there’s another way to market your book inventory stacked in the garage.

Use the Internet to bring your book sales to a new level. There’s a whole new online audience in your field waiting for your insightful book. Therefore, your book marketing plan should include:

1. Creating a direct response website.

A direct response site commonly called a mini-site will serve one purpose. That one purpose will be to sell your book. Therefore, there’s no community buttons, forums, articles or page of links. The links that are present will lead only to your order page.

The front or home page contains your sales letter. The sales letter acts as a mini-salesman that’s on duty 24/7 to tell anyone interested about your book.

2. Selling your print books online.

You can sell thousands of your print books online. Simply set up an order page with the ability to receive credit cards. According to your business field you may already have a merchant account. If so, your merchant account provider will be happy to create an online account with virtual terminal. No merchant account?

No worries. There are 3rd party payment processors that specialize in handling secure online transactions. Companies like PayPal, 2Checkout and host of others now handle thousands of online transactions daily. Most even have connections to handle shipping charges as well.

3. Developing short ebooks.

If your print book is short enough, you can simply convert your book from word document to PDF (portable document format.) If not, use short excerpts from each chapter to compile your e-chapters.

Develop your e-book with pages from 10-100. Make it the same topic as your book formatted with sections and/or chapters. If your time permits, you might consider adding additional value for your reader.

Write each new ebook chapter to answer a list of problems your audience has. Include several solutions, illustrations, exhibits, checklist and/or worksheets. Compile into an ebook then give it away to your website visitors to promote your longer version print book.

4. Writing short articles.

I am almost sure like me you have the material needed for your articles in your book research files, speeches, life long experiences, your skills, hobbies or career. You might have extra information that wasn’t room for in your book. Now is a perfect time to revisit that information.

Begin to examine your life for article ideas related to your book topic. You might be surprised at what you find. Translate any of these into short articles with 400-1200 words. Also, simply use excerpts from your book to convert to short articles. For example, even from my shortest book, I was able to excerpt small pockets of information and develop into short articles.

5. Creating short reports.

Expand your article with stories, examples, illustrations, exhibits and resources. Create a three-twelve page report full of specific information your audience wants.

Put your report or e-course on auto-responder so that you can collect the email address of each person interested. That way, if they don’t buy from you after receiving your free useful report, they get other opportunities to buy from you as they receive additional emails from you.

Every one that has sold thousands of books had to start somewhere less than the best seller list. Realize that kind of sales took time to grow. Remember, it depends on how much time you are willing to invest.

Think about how much effort you invested in writing your book then be willing to put at least an equal amount of time into marketing it. Get started now; a whole new internet market awaits your message. Start by selling those books stacked in your garage. Sell more books and prosper!

Introduction

Write a strong paragraph that states the book’s title (underlined or italicized), genre, author’s name, and publication information. Also give a brief statement about the book’s angle or message. This section of book report writing may include characters involves in the story and the theme of the story.

The book report introduction has to be strong and informative. It has to give the basic book information and has to state the book’s message. It may include your personnel opinion on it and tell the readers what you are going to analyze. It’s important to realize that when giving information on the book and author, avoid spilling facts like his biography and previously written works.

The Body

Writing a book report is no doubt a tricky work. The body part is the main and biggest part of your book report writing. You have to put all the analysis and opinions in this area. While writing this part of book report, consider the questions like

Is this book worth to read?

How was the writing style and flow of events?

Is it a fictional book or non-fictional

These points will give you enough data to write two to three paragraphs regarding the book. When ending the body of book report answer the following points.

The Conclusion

In showing how he strategizes right through that tournament he creates sincere value that we amateur players may have never before been exposed to because players like Gus are just so rare.

If you’ve ever seen some of the hands from this tournament on youtube, you will see that Gus was actually using a personal recording device and whispering into a mic throughout the Aussie Millions Tournament. You have to wonder if it was a self check system for Gus, or if he had actually planned to use the information for this book ahead of time.

Nonetheless he was definitely in a good position to analyze the hands for this book as he could easily review the chips counts, stacks, position and all the other important tournament factors. You get his detailed insight into the thought processes of one of the best tourney players in the world, while also learning about the different strategies of playing a full table and playing short-handed, and how important aggression is part of Gus Hansen’s game.

Hansen’s book should be read after Harrington’s because you have two very different styles, but one could argue that Hansen is more successful than Harrington. This is more a less a personal slant as to what style you can play effectively where one style is no better than the other. Gus writes quite blatantly that most poker books are too theoretical and assert play that far too tight for tournaments.

The practical style poker books seems to carry more value as they are just that much easier to read, think about, and then take to the table yourself, trying to recognize similar situations you may have just soaked in. Gus Hansen’s book is all about this, and it makes it easily worth every cent.

There were a lot of tournament structure and strategy notes that Gus explained in this poker book review too, as he made a habit of recapping the day’s events, setting up for the day ahead, analyzing blinds changes and payout structures, and really analyzing his opponents quite frequently as the tournament changed. Surely an advanced poker this is, from one of the world’s most gifted players.
